Lawn Mower Engines: Seeding Or Sodding?

If you’re looking to invest in a new lawn, or your trying to recover a sun-scorched lawn, you’re going to be looking for grass seed or grass sod. As your lawn mower engine and parts dealer, we’ve got the inside scoop on the pros and cons of seed, and the pros and cons of sod…

Seed

  • It’s Cheap: Seeding a lawn with grass seed is the cheaper option by far. Sod’s expensive; seed’s not.
  • It’s Versatile: There are lots of seed varieties out there and not as many sod options. If you’re looking for a specific seed, grass seed is the only way to go.
  • It’s Easy to Install: Since you simply have to spread the grass seed over fertile soil, it’s super easy to plant. Spread it, water it, and wait!
  • It’s Less Likely to Work: You’ll have to be hopeful that your grass seed takes root in its soil. If a seed doesn’t find itself on the right soil, with enough water, or too little sun, it just won’t sprout.
  • It Takes Time: It’ll take time to have a full lawn if you’re going for grass seed. What’s more, you’ll want to stay off the lawn as it’s growing - so you’ll miss a few weeks that you might have enjoyed on a sod lawn.
  • Beware of Weeds: Since your seeds will be laid on barren dirt, weeds may try to move in as well. Your lawn will likely need some weeding once you’re able to walk on it without damaging your young grass.

Sod

  • It’s Instantaneous: Once sod is laid, you’ve got a lawn. Although you don’t want to walk on it right away, it’s safe to enjoy your lawn in a week or so!
  • Fewer Weeds: Since sod grass is thick and fully grown, you won’t have to worry about weeds. Weeds can’t compete with thick tufts of grass.
  • Planting Period: Plant your sod during any months where grass isn’t dormant. You’ll want to avoid planting right before winter, but you’ve got quite the range of time to plant your lawn.
  • It’s Very Likely to Hold: Since the grass is already growing, sod is perfectly prepared to continue living. Just be sure that you’re planting your sod on fertile soil, and that you’re prepared to give it water every day.
  • Less Variety: There are fewer varieties of sod out there than there are seeds. That’s because sod grass has to be prepared specifically as sod, in order to transport it in rolls. That means you’ll be stuck with only a couple of grass type options.
  • Expensive: Sod is pricey! You’re paying for a sod grower’s time, supplies, and water; you’re paying for transportation to your site; and you may be paying to have your sod installed if you aren’t installing it yourself.
